Is a Whale Shark Tour from Manila Worth It?

Most whale shark tours from Manila are actually day trips to Donsol in Sorsogon, involving a very early flight or a long van ride. Expect roughly 8–10 hours of total travel time for about 2–3 hours on the water. The experience is tightly regulated: you snorkel (no scuba) in small groups, staying a few meters from the sharks while spotters on the boat direct the boatmen. The sharks are gentle filter feeders, but encounters are wild when a 6–8 meter animal glides straight at you. Visibility is usually decent but not crystal clear, and you’ll be sharing the water with other boats when the season is busy.

The best time is February to May, peaking in March and April when plankton is abundant and sightings are most consistent. June to January is much less reliable. Expect to pay around $180–280 per person from Manila, covering transport, boat fee, guide, and basic snorkel gear. Cheaper options exist but usually mean more people, worse boats, or very early departures.

Pick a smaller-group trip if possible; it makes a huge difference in the water. Skip the add-on “swim with whale sharks in Oslob, Cebu” packages sold by some Manila operators — that’s a different, heavily criticized experience where sharks are fed. Donsol is the real deal, but only go if you’re okay with a long travel day and no guaranteed sighting.
