Expect a half- to full-day trip that mixes river swimming, cliff jumping, and cascading waterfalls surrounded by jungle. The drive from Montego Bay takes about 90 minutes each way through countryside. At the falls you'll walk along paved paths and wooden steps, swim in natural pools, and can jump from rocks up to about 30 feet if you're comfortable with heights. Guides help with navigation and photos. It's refreshing after a few beach days but involves some physical activity and can get crowded with groups. The water is cold and clear year-round.
Best time to go is December to April when it's drier and less likely to be slippery. Rainy season (May-November) makes the falls more dramatic but the paths muddier and jumps sometimes closed for safety. Expect to pay around $50-80 for a basic transport-and-entry tour from Montego Bay; add $30-60 more if it includes Black River safari and lunch. Private tours or smaller groups run $150-200 per person.
Pick the standard YS Falls-only option if you just want swimming and photos; skip the combo Black River tour unless you really want to see crocodiles, as it makes for a very long day. Bring water shoes—they make climbing the rocks much easier and protect against slips. Don't forget bug spray for the bus ride back.
