Denver Zoo: Worth It?

The Denver Zoo is a solid, well-run zoo with good habitats for most animals and a decent variety of species. Expect clean facilities, solid gorilla and lion exhibits, and a nice tropical bird house. It’s not the biggest zoo in the country, but it’s large enough that you’ll want 3–4 hours to see everything at a comfortable pace. Crowds can build quickly on weekends and during school holidays, so weekdays feel far more relaxed. Summers get hot and busy; spring and fall offer much better weather and fewer people.

Expect to pay around $20–$30 per adult ticket depending on the season and whether you buy online in advance. Kids and seniors are cheaper. Add another $8–12 if you want the train ride or carousel. Best tip: skip the paid animal encounters and extra shows on a first visit — they’re cute but eat up time better spent watching the big cats or primates at their own pace. Bring your own water and snacks; the on-site food is average and overpriced. Go early, especially in summer, and head straight for the African section first before the crowds arrive.
