Edinburgh Zoo: Worth the Trip?

Edinburgh Zoo sits just outside the city centre and houses around 2,500 animals including penguins, koalas, and big cats. Expect a full day of walking on hilly paths with decent viewing areas for most enclosures. The penguin parade remains genuinely popular but gets crowded; the rest of the zoo offers a relaxed pace where you can spend time watching animals without constant crowds. It's well-maintained with good information boards, though some older enclosures feel a bit dated compared to brand-new wildlife parks.

Go between April and September for best weather and longer opening hours. Summer weekends get busy after 11am, so arrive early. Expect to pay around £20-£28 per adult ticket depending on season and whether you book ahead. Kids are roughly half price. Adding a keeper talk or behind-the-scenes experience pushes it toward the higher end.

Pick the hilltop chimpanzee and monkey areas plus the giant pandas if they're still there - these consistently deliver. Skip the gift shop at the exit unless you need souvenirs; it's overpriced. Wear comfortable shoes as the site is steeper than it looks on maps. Bring your own snacks or eat before you arrive - the on-site food is average and expensive for what you get.
