Is the Manila Zoo Worth It?

Manila Zoo is a small, old-school zoo in the middle of the city. Expect a modest collection of animals — crocodiles, monkeys, birds, a few big cats, and the resident elephant. The facilities are dated, some enclosures are cramped by modern standards, and it can feel a bit run-down, especially after rain. Most visitors finish the whole place in 1.5 to 2 hours. It’s not a world-class zoo, but it works fine if you’re traveling with kids or want a cheap, low-commitment animal experience without leaving Manila.

The best time to visit is December to February when it’s cooler and less humid. Avoid midday in the hot season (March–May); the animals hide and you’ll be sweating the whole time. Expect to pay around $6–12 per person for entry, with families and combo tickets pushing the total higher if you add transport or a guide. Food inside is limited and overpriced, so eat before or after.

Honest tips: Go early in the morning when the animals are more active and crowds are thinner. Skip the souvenir shops and most of the food stalls. If you have limited time or a bigger budget, many travelers get more value from Manila Ocean Park instead — the zoo is best treated as a quick, cheap half-day activity rather than a highlight.
