Taipei Zoo: Worth Visiting?

Taipei Zoo is large, clean, and genuinely one of the better city zoos in Asia. Expect a full day if you want to see everything without rushing. The giant panda house is the main draw and gets crowded, but the enclosures for Asian elephants, koalas, penguins, and especially the native Taiwanese animals (like the Formosan black bears and clouded leopards) are surprisingly good. It's hilly with a lot of walking, so wear decent shoes. The Maokong Gondola station is right at the zoo entrance, which makes combining both activities easy and pleasant.

Best time is weekdays, especially in the cooler months from November to March. Summers are hot, humid, and packed with school groups. Expect to pay around US$4–7 for a standard adult ticket. Add another $6–10 if you want the gondola ride up to the tea plantations afterward. A half-day zoo visit plus gondola usually lands between $12–20 total per person.

Smart move: go straight to the pandas first thing in the morning, then work your way downhill. Skip the dinosaur museum and most souvenir shops—they're average. Bring your own water and snacks; the on-site food is overpriced and mediocre. If you're short on time or energy, just do the pandas, koalas, and main Asian trail instead of trying to cover the entire park.
