Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle built in the late 1290s on the banks of the Oslofjord in Oslo, Norway, originally constructed to protect the city and serve as a royal residence. Visitors can explore a fortification that has never been successfully besieged by a foreign enemy, survived multiple historical conflicts from the Middle Ages through World War II, and currently functions as a military site and temporary office of the Norwegian Prime Minister.
