Al-Azhar Mosque is a historic congregational mosque commissioned in 970 CE as the first mosque in Cairo, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring Fatimid architecture with later Mamluk additions, including five minarets and a capacity for 20,000 worshippers. Visitors can explore the main courtyard and observe centuries of Islamic architectural development, as well as experience a site deeply connected to Islamic scholarship, as the affiliated Al-Azhar University remains one of the world's foremost institutions for the study of Sunni theology and Islamic law. The mosque stands as a symbol of Islamic Egypt and continues to be highly revered in the Sunni Muslim world.
