Cantareira State Park is a 7,916-hectare protected area of Atlantic Forest in the Serra da Cantareira mountains north of São Paulo, featuring four visitor centers including Pedra Grande with a lookout at 1,010 meters altitude overlooking the city. The park protects important remnants of montane rainforest and serves as a critical water source for São Paulo's 8.8 million residents, while supporting 866 species of fauna including 233 bird species recognized by BirdLife International as significant for bird conservation. Visitors can explore the regenerating forest ecosystem on weekends, with the park serving as an important leisure and research destination for surrounding communities.
