Lovrjenac Fortress is a detached stronghold rising 37 meters high on a rock in Dubrovnik's Pile suburb, with origins dating to 1018-1038 and featuring a chapel dedicated to St. Lawrence incorporated into its structure. Visitors can explore the fortress's three levels with open platforms and battlements, view the famous inscription 'Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro' carved into the gate, and learn about its medieval military architecture and subsequent history as a barracks and prison. Today the fortress serves as a stage for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, particularly for classical drama performances including Shakespeare's Hamlet.
