Book this experience →

Melville Koppies is a nature reserve and Johannesburg City Heritage Site preserving the last conserved remnant of the city's ridges as they existed before the 1886 gold discovery, with geology spanning three billion years and evidence of human habitation dating back 500,000 years. Visitors hike scenic trails through indigenous highveld vegetation, explore Iron Age kraal remains and a 1963 iron-smelting furnace, and access heritage trails and guided tours available on Sunday mornings. The reserve offers walking options ranging from self-guided exploration to structured heritage trails and group hikes, with separate daily-access areas for those unable to visit on Sundays.
