Nikko Tōshō-gū is a shrine founded in 1617 to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun, and was reconstructed in its current ornate form by the third shogun in 1636. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, visitors come to experience one of Japan's foremost shrines and its grounds, which include the historic Nikko cryptomeria avenue with approximately 12,500 trees planted beginning in 1625.
