The Cockspur Island Lighthouse is a historic brick tower located twelve miles east of Savannah, marking the South Channel of the Savannah River. Built between 1837-1839 and reconstructed after an 1854 hurricane, the lighthouse remarkably survived the 1862 Civil War bombardment of Fort Pulaski. Visitors can view the preserved lighthouse from an overlook trail, as the lighthouse island itself remains closed to the public due to ongoing preservation efforts.
