Coyote Buttes North, known as The Wave, features some of the most visually striking geologic sandstone formations in the world within a 112,500-acre wilderness area. Visitors hike a strenuous 6.4-mile round-trip route through undeveloped backcountry terrain, requiring navigation skills and physical fitness. Access is controlled by a permit system through daily or advanced lotteries to preserve the fragile wilderness character.
