Bilt dropped its 2027 program overhaul yesterday, and the details matter more than the press release spin. The headline change: Flexible Bilt Cash mode—the one that pays 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday spending in addition to regular points—is being retired for new accounts after December 31, 2026. Existing cardholders keep the option only if they proactively opt out of the new “simpler” benefits before their card anniversary date.

Do nothing and you default to earning up to 1.25x Bilt Points on rent or mortgage based on your non-housing spend. That might suit heavy rent-payers who hate managing Bilt Cash. For everyone else putting real volume on the card outside of housing, 4% cash is real money. Bilt itself admits most people aren’t using the Flexible mode today. That doesn’t mean it’s worthless for those who do.

The exact move to protect your rate

Open the Bilt app, go to your card in the wallet, tap into the rewards or “Your card rewards” section, and look for the update prompt. The default selected is the new housing-focused model. Swipe or select Flexible Bilt Cash instead and save. Do this before your anniversary—whenever that is. Cards opened early in 2026 likely hit theirs in the next few months.

Once you opt out, the choice is locked. No more flipping between modes. You also keep your existing annual credits instead of the restructured ones. New applicants after January 1 get the refreshed program from day one with no 4% option available.

What else is changing—and the mixed bag

Bilt Cash expiration is genuinely better. Effective immediately (and retroactive), it expires at the end of the month 12 months after it’s earned. No more December 31 scramble with only $100 rolling over. Earned in February 2026? It now lasts until February 28, 2027. This is the rare win that helps everyone.

Hotel redemptions with Bilt Cash get nerfed starting January 1, 2027. Currently Gold and Platinum status members can apply up to $100 per month toward eligible Bilt Hotel bookings (two-night minimum). After the change it drops to twice per year: $100 per redemption for Gold/Platinum ($200 total annually), $50 per redemption for Blue/Silver. Palladium cardholders get $200 per redemption twice a year if they stay on the legacy track.

Compare that to today’s monthly flexibility and the math tilts against heavy hotel users. Legacy Palladium holders who opt out can still stack their current $400 annual hotel credits (split semiannually) with Bilt Cash for bigger bites—up to potentially $300 off a stay twice a year. Everyone else loses frequency.

Annual credits themselves are reshuffled. Palladium moves from $200 Bilt Cash plus $400 in hotel credits to a flat $600 Bilt Cash. Obsidian’s $100 hotel credit becomes $100 Bilt Cash. These now post on your card anniversary instead of January 1. If you actually used those hotel credits every six months, the new version is less valuable unless you redeem Bilt Cash at the old 1:1 rate effectively.

The new stuff: Daily Rewards and other tweaks

Starting January 15, 2027, Daily Rewards kicks in. On-time housing payments and neighborhood partner activity earn entries or rewards with a grand prize of $1 million toward a home. It sounds like a lottery layered on top of rent day. Whether it moves the needle depends on how generous the smaller prizes are—details are still thin.

Elite status gets some love with more redemption options for Gold and Platinum on “Home Away from Home” luxury hotel bookings, plus potential status matches. Nice, but not the main event.

One quiet devaluation snuck in earlier: Bilt Points to World of Hyatt drop to a 4:3 ratio on January 1, 2027. Book your transfers before the new year if Hyatt is your jam.

The overall tone from Bilt is “simplification.” Translation: we’re making the program easier to explain and less generous in places where it mattered to power users. The 4% Bilt Cash was always the quirky, high-upside lever for those who maximized it on groceries, dining, and travel spend while still unlocking rent points. Losing the ability to toggle it freely stings.

Who should opt out right now

If your Bilt card sees heavy non-housing spend and you value the 4% Bilt Cash for flexibility—whether to accelerate rent points, buy gift cards, or offset travel—opt out today. The window is personal but closing fast for many. Check your anniversary in the app immediately.

If you mostly care about rent earnings and don’t want to track Bilt Cash balances, let the default happen. You’ll get the streamlined 1.25x path without extra steps. Palladium holders should run the numbers on keeping the old hotel credits versus the new $600 cash; the legacy path looks stronger if you travel in Bilt’s hotel portal.

Either way, the changes are live in the app. Bilt buried the opt-out behind a default switch, and the media coverage has been a dozen variations on “here are the updates.” The action item is simple and non-negotiable for the right people: open the app, protect the 4%, and decide before your renewal date hits.

Do it this week. The program is evolving whether you like it or not—might as well keep the version that actually pays you.
