Most Hyatt elites treat Suite Upgrade Awards like that half-empty bottle of duty-free gin in the back of the cabinet: earned, vaguely appreciated, and left to expire. That’s a mistake, especially now as Q4 corporate travel ramps up and everyone scrambles to lock in Globalist status before the February reset.
These awards remain one of the cleanest cheats in the game. Apply one at booking on a standard room rate (or points + cash) and you lock in a standard suite for up to seven consecutive nights—no roulette at check-in, no praying for availability. At properties like Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme, Alila Ventana Big Sur, or Thompson hotels, the cash difference between a room and that suite can hit four figures a night. Your SUA turns that into a rounding error.
The confusion is understandable. Earning rules live in the Milestone Rewards table, which Hyatt updates quietly and never explains like a normal human. Here’s the current 2026 reality:
Earning Thresholds
Explorist path (before Globalist): Hit 40 qualifying nights or 65,000 base points and you can choose one SUA. At 50 nights or 80,000 base points, the choice becomes two SUAs. These are selectable options alongside points or FIND credits.
Globalist at 60 nights or 100,000 base points: You automatically receive two SUAs as part of the tier package. Lifetime Globalists get an extra four annually. Beyond 60 nights, every additional 10-night milestone (70 through 150) lets you pick another SUA if you want—maxing out around 14 in a heroic year.
You can hold and combine multiple awards in your account. They don’t stack on a single reservation (one per stay/confirmation), but you can split a longer trip into separate bookings. Most importantly, they’re transferable to other World of Hyatt members—useful for gifting to colleagues or family who actually fly more than you do.
What Still Accepts Them in 2026
SUAs confirm upgrades to standard suites only (premium suites remain cash or points territory). They work on paid rates, points bookings, and most points + cash combinations, provided a standard suite is bookable for your entire stay.
Core luxury brands remain in play: Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Andaz, Alila, Thompson, and many Hyatt Centric and Regency properties. The list of exclusions grows every year—currently including all Hyatt Place, Hyatt Studios, Caption by Hyatt, Hyatt Vacation Club, AMR Legacy all-inclusives (Secrets, Dreams, etc.), and a rotating cast of individual aspirational hotels.
Recent additions to the no-go list include Alila Napa Valley and the yet-to-open Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman. Park Hyatt Sydney, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills, and several others have been off-limits for a while. Always check the full ineligible list in the program terms before calling to apply—nothing kills the vibe like an agent telling you your shiny award is worthless here.
No major changes to confirmation windows this year. You apply the SUA at the time of booking (best done by calling Global Contact Center rather than relying on the app, which is still glitchy). Confirmation is immediate if inventory exists. Expiration is straightforward: awards are valid through the end of the year earned plus 14 months. Earned in 2026? Use by February 2028 for the stay completion date.
The real edge for business travelers is timing. Book Q4 now while corporate rates haven’t fully choked inventory. Pair SUAs with the early award booking window Globalists and cardholders get (13 months vs 12 for peasants). And stop hoarding them until December—use one on a January reset trip and the math works in your favor.
Hyatt’s program is still the least stupid major hotel loyalty setup for anyone who flies business, carries a premium card, and actually stays in nice hotels. The SUA is the part most people ignore that delivers the highest ROI. Don’t be most people.
Action item: Log into your World of Hyatt account today, check your Milestone Rewards progress and any existing SUAs, pull the current ineligible properties list, and identify two Q4 trips where a standard suite would meaningfully improve your life. Book the base room, call Global Contact Center to attach the award, and move on. Your future self—slightly less cramped, marginally more smug—will thank you.
