Bunce Island: Private History Tour by Boat

A private boat trip up the Sierra Leone River to the ruins of a former British slave-trading fort — one of the most sobering, important historical sites in West Africa.

What to expect

You'll board a small private boat from near Freetown for the roughly hour-long river crossing to the island. On arrival, your guide walks you through the crumbling fort walls, slave houses and cemetery, explaining the island's central role in the transatlantic slave trade and its documented links to Gullah Geechee ancestry. It's atmospheric, quiet, and genuinely moving.

Good to know

This is a full-day undertaking from Tokeh given river transit times; only feasible on a long port call. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven ruins and bring water and sun protection.
