Land on Lunga and sit at arm's length from thousands of nesting puffins who show no fear of people. It's the single most magical wildlife encounter in Scotland.
What to expect
You transfer from the tour boat to a small inflatable to land on Lunga's shingle beach. A short walk up the headland puts you right beside puffin burrows, with guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes wheeling below on the sea stacks. Guides linger to help you get the classic low-angle puffin shot and explain the colony's breeding cycle. Weather and swell permitting, this is the highlight most passengers remember years later.
Good to know
Runs April–July only, when puffins are ashore; landing depends on sea conditions and is never guaranteed. Wear sturdy shoes and waterproofs, and confirm return timing against your ship's all-aboard well in advance.
