Fingal's Cave, Staffa: The Basalt Cathedral by Small Boat

Sail into the cove of Staffa to walk the hexagonal basalt causeway into Fingal's Cave, the natural cathedral that inspired Mendelssohn and Turner.

What to expect

The boat noses into a sheltered bay beneath towering columnar basalt cliffs. You disembark onto a rock platform and walk along a walkway of naturally hexagonal columns into the cave mouth, where the sea booms and echoes exactly as the Romantic composers described. Above, a short clifftop path gives views back over Mull and the Treshnish chain. It's combined in one outing with the Lunga puffin landing for a full day on the water.

Good to know

The causeway walk is uneven and can be slippery with spray; not ideal for limited mobility. Departures are weather-dependent, so build in slack before your ship's departure.
