Herring Factory Ghost Tour with a Local Storyteller

Walk the crumbling herring factory at dawn light with the family who still lives in this near-abandoned fjord village, hearing the boom-to-bust story firsthand.

What to expect

You enter through rusting machine halls that once processed more herring than any factory in Europe, climbing past silent turbines and abandoned control rooms. Your guide, tied by family history to the village, explains the sudden collapse of the herring stocks that emptied the town almost overnight. Light pours through broken windows onto decades-old equipment left exactly where it stopped. It's eerie, intimate, and unlike anywhere else in Iceland.

Good to know

Book the 10:00 departure directly from the hotel reception or by email in advance — it's the only guaranteed slot for small groups; the 14:00 tour needs four people minimum. Wear sturdy shoes; parts of the factory are uneven and unheated.
