Guided Herring Factory Tour, Standard 10:00 Departure

The classic small-group walk through the herring factory's cavernous halls, Iceland's largest concrete building when built, with a guide explaining its rise and fall.

What to expect

You step from bright fjord light into echoing dark machine halls, following narrow stairwells past turbines and empty oil tanks. The guide's telling is personal, sometimes emotional, given the village's near-total dependence on the factory before its collapse. Photographs on peeling walls show the boomtown years when hundreds worked here. It ends outside, looking back at the looming concrete shell against the mountains.
