Tour the sole Rhine castle never destroyed or rebuilt, perched 150 metres above the river at Braubach — 3.8 miles from Lahnstein. Its original medieval rooms, weapons hall, and torture chamber are staggeringly authentic.
What to expect
A short scenic transfer from Lahnstein brings you to Braubach, from where a steep cobbled path climbs to Marksburg's gatehouse — the anticipation is part of the magic. Inside, the guided tour moves through a herb garden used since the 12th century, a genuine medieval great hall, a knights' armoury bristling with original weapons, and one of Germany's best-preserved castle kitchens. The Rhine panorama from the battlements is spectacular, with the gorge stretching in both directions. Unlike reconstructed castles, every room here is the real thing — layers of history you can practically touch.
Good to know
Marksburg is 3.8 miles from the ship — a short taxi or private car transfer. Tours run regularly; the castle can be busy mid-morning, so aim for a 09:00 departure for a quieter experience. Allow 2–2.5 hrs including transfer.
