Perched dramatically above the Lahn's confluence with the Rhine, 13th-century Lahneck Castle is Lahnstein's own crown jewel — offering richly furnished neo-Gothic interiors and one of the most romantic river panoramas in the Rhineland.
What to expect
A short uphill walk or private car transfer from the pier brings you to Lahneck's imposing gatehouse, where a knowledgeable guide introduces the castle's medieval origins and its 19th-century romantic restoration. Inside, vaulted halls display period armour, tapestries, and family heirlooms in an atmosphere that is genuinely lived-in rather than museum-sterile. The highlight is the castle terrace: vineyards cascade below, the Rhine bends through the gorge, and Stolzenfels Castle glows on the opposite bank. Being this close to the ship and yet feeling so transported is part of the magic.
Good to know
Lahneck Castle is walking distance (uphill, ~15 mins) or a 5-min taxi from the pier — the most convenient bucket-list excursion of the day. Pre-book a guided tour via burg-lahneck.de. Open April–October; check seasonal hours.
