A free, wide-open walk along a wild, driftwood-strewn beach facing the open Pacific, with Mount St. Elias visible on a clear day.
What to expect
A short drive from the harbor gets you to Cannon Beach, where you can walk for miles on hard-packed sand with the Gulf of Alaska rolling in. Surfers sometimes work the break, and eagles patrol the tideline for salmon carcasses. On clear days Mount St. Elias appears improbably large on the horizon.
Good to know
No facilities, so bring water and sun/wind protection. Renting a car or arranging a short taxi from the dock is the easiest way in; walkable in about 30-40 minutes if you'd rather stretch your legs.
