Amami Oshima Tsumugi Silk Weaving Studio Visit

A hands-on introduction to Oshima tsumugi, the mud-dyed silk unique to this island, in the workshop of artisans who have practiced the craft for generations.

What to expect

A guide walks you through the extraordinary process behind Oshima tsumugi: threads dyed dozens of times in iron-rich mud and the sap of the local sharinbai tree, producing the fabric's signature deep brown-black sheen. You'll see looms in action, some worked by weavers who have spent decades perfecting complex kasuri patterns. There's usually an opportunity to try dyeing a small piece of cloth yourself, and a small shop sells finished pieces, from accessories to full kimono lengths.
