Amami Park & Tanaka Isson Memorial Art Museum

A quiet, unhurried visit to the museum devoted to Tanaka Isson, the reclusive painter who spent his final decades capturing Amami's subtropical landscape in extraordinary detail.

What to expect

The museum houses a rotating collection of Tanaka Isson's botanical and landscape paintings, made over 20 years of quiet, isolated life on Amami studying its plants, birds, and light. The building itself, surrounded by gardens replicating the island's subtropical flora, is worth wandering before or after. It's a small museum, easily covered in an hour, and rarely crowded even in high season. The adjoining Amami Park has additional exhibits on island history, folk craft, and natural history for those who want to stay longer.
