Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden & Ropeway: Sky Terrace

Soar above the city on a glass gondola to Japan's largest herb garden, 400 m above Kobe. Wander scented terraces with sweeping bay views — a sensory masterpiece that is genuinely bucket-list.

What to expect

Board the Shin-Kobe Ropeway just minutes from the city centre and glide up through forested hillsides to the Sky Terrace. The garden unfolds across 14 themed zones — lavender, rose, chamomile — with open-air cafés and a fountain plaza. On clear days the view encompasses Osaka Bay, the Akashi Bridge, and the Kii Peninsula. Descend at your own pace, stopping at Nunobiki Falls, one of Japan's three great waterfalls, on the short forest walk below.

Good to know

Shin-Kobe Station (ropeway base) is a 10-min taxi from the cruise pier — budget JPY 1,500–2,000. First gondola departs 09:30; last descent is typically 17:00. No pre-booking required, but weekday mornings are quietest. Allow 2–3 hours total; easily back well before all-aboard.
