The Hai Van Pass — the 'Ocean Cloud Pass' — is one of the world's great coastal mountain drives, separating the climates of north and south Vietnam with a jaw-dropping ridge road above turquoise sea. This private half-day excursion is pure cinematic Vietnam.
What to expect
Departing Chan May, your private car winds up through jungle to the 496-metre summit of Hai Van Pass, where the ruins of a French fort stand sentinel over one of Asia's most breathtaking panoramas — mountains plunging into a horseshoe of electric-blue bay. Your guide explains the strategic military history of this natural dividing line and points out the exact spot where the warm south meets the cool, misty north. The descent reveals the pristine lagoon peninsula of Lang Co, with its perfect arc of white sand beach and stilted fishing village — an optional swim stop can be included. The return journey back to Chan May Port takes in the coast road for sunset views.
Good to know
The summit can be misty early morning; afternoon departures often catch the best light. Drive time from Chan May to the pass summit is only ~30 minutes, making this very manageable for a port day. All-aboard times should be confirmed before departure — allow a minimum 30-minute buffer. No entry fees at the pass itself.
