Board the legendary Flåmsbana — one of the world's steepest railway journeys — winding through 20 tunnels, past roaring waterfalls and soaring peaks from fjord to mountaintop. A bucket-list rail experience unlike any other on Earth.
What to expect
The Flåmsbana climbs 863 metres from Flåm fjord to Myrdal on the Bergen Line, negotiating gradients so steep the train uses five independent brake systems. The train pauses at the thundering Kjosfossen waterfall, where a lone 'Huldra' figure dances on the rocks in Norse mythology tradition. At Myrdal you can linger over the mountain panorama before the equally spectacular descent back to the fjord. Book the earliest departure to secure window seats and avoid the midday rush.
Good to know
The station is a two-minute walk from the cruise pier. Pre-book online — round-trip seats sell out weeks ahead in high season (May–September). Journey is approximately 1 hour each way, so a round-trip comfortably fits a port day. All-aboard times are typically early evening.
