Paddle deep into Raiatea's lush interior along the Faaroa — the only navigable river in all of French Polynesia — through a cathedral of tropical rainforest draped in wild hibiscus, breadfruit, and ancient ferns. A genuinely rare experience that most visitors to the Pacific never find.
What to expect
After a short transfer from the dock, you launch kayaks at the river mouth where the lagoon meets the rainforest. Paddling upstream, the canopy closes overhead and the silence is profound — broken only by birdsong and the dip of your paddle. Your guide points out medicinal plants used in traditional Polynesian healing, and you drift past the roots of ancient tamanu trees. The river terminates near the slopes of Mount Temehani, home to the legendary tiare apetahi flower found nowhere else on Earth. The return paddle downstream is effortless, with the lagoon glittering ahead.
