Explore the atmospheric ruins of Peel Castle on St Patrick's Isle — a tidal islet fortress with Viking roots, a Romanesque cathedral, and a legendary sea-monster myth. One of the most evocative and photogenic heritage sites in the British Isles.
What to expect
Cross the causeway to St Patrick's Isle and step inside curtain walls that have stood since the 11th century. Wander through the roofless St German's Cathedral, descend into the crypt, and stand at the round tower — one of the finest in the British Isles. Interpretive panels and audio guides bring the Norse and Celtic layers of history to life. The views back across Peel Harbour and out to the Irish Sea are breathtaking at any hour.
Good to know
Peel is 12 miles west of Douglas; pre-arrange a private taxi or hire car — the drive along the mountain road (A1) is itself spectacular. Allow 1.5 hours at the castle. Pair with the House of Manannan museum on the quayside (included in the heritage passport) for full context.
