Glide through the ink-black Klias wetlands as Borneo's endemic proboscis monkeys settle into the mangroves at dusk, then watch thousands of fireflies illuminate the riverbanks like living constellations — one of Southeast Asia's most magical wildlife spectacles.
What to expect
The journey begins in late afternoon with a scenic 2-hour drive through palm plantations to the Klias River delta. At sunset, flat-bottomed boats slip silently into the mangrove labyrinth while guides spotlight proboscis monkeys, silver langurs, and monitor lizards roosting overhead. As darkness falls, entire trees pulse with synchronised fireflies in a display that defies description. A traditional dinner is served riverside before the return transfer. Back in Kota Kinabalu by approximately 10–11 pm.
