Glide through the living channels of Montgomery Reef aboard a nimble Zodiac, navigating cascading tidal waterfalls and encountering turtles, dugongs, and reef sharks in their element. The most intimate and immersive way to experience the reef at water level.
What to expect
As the tide ebbs, your Zodiac launches into channels that minutes earlier were submerged — the reef visibly rising around you, waterfalls forming off its limestone terraces in real time. Your naturalist guide cuts the engine so you drift silently past basking flatback turtles and schools of baitfish boiling in the current. The geology here is extraordinary: Montgomery is a rhodolith reef system, built not by hard coral but by free-living coralline algae, making it unlike any reef on Earth. The return journey often yields dolphin escorts and, in season, humpback whale sightings.
Good to know
Zodiac access is entirely tide-dependent; the optimal window is roughly two hours either side of low tide. Wear enclosed shoes and a light layer — spray is likely. Booking via True North is best done as part of their broader Kimberley expedition itinerary for the full experience.
