Glide through the serene backwater channels of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge on a guided kayak journey. Bald eagles, river otters, and ancient cypress-draped sloughs await — true wilderness minutes from the dock.
What to expect
Your certified guide launches you into the glassy backwater channels behind the main river channel, where motorboat traffic disappears and the soundscape becomes pure birdsong and paddle-splash. The Black River confluence creates a mosaic of islands, oxbow lakes, and flooded forest that shelters remarkable concentrations of waterfowl, eagles, and river wildlife. Guides provide all equipment — kayak, paddle, PFD — and tailor the pace and route to group experience levels. The 2.5–3 hour paddle is suitable for beginners and rewards experienced paddlers equally.
Good to know
Book your guided tour directly with Rutabaga well in advance during peak summer season. Wear quick-dry clothing and bring sunscreen and water. Launch points are a short drive or rideshare from the riverfront dock. Allow 3–3.5 hours total including outfitting.
