Receive your official membership into the world-famous Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society (Isbjørnklubben) — one of the most storied and exclusive Arctic traditions a traveller can join. A Hammerfest rite of passage since 1963.
What to expect
The Society's clubhouse sits directly on the Hammerfest quayside, making it an effortless first or last stop during your port call. A keeper of the Society guides you through the formal initiation, explaining the Society's origins in the era of great polar expeditions and Arctic hunting. You sign the membership ledger, receive your numbered certificate, and are awarded the iconic polar bear pin — worn with pride by explorers, royals, and adventurers since 1963. The adjacent museum displays historic Arctic artifacts and polar bear memorabilia worth lingering over.
Good to know
Walk directly off the ship — the clubhouse is steps from the gangway. No pre-booking required, but arriving early avoids queues when multiple ships are in port. Allow 45–60 minutes for the full experience.
