Step inside the largest and most spectacular of Bornholm's legendary round churches — a 12th-century whitewashed fortress-church unlike anything else in Scandinavia. Pure cultural magic.
What to expect
Bornholm's four round churches are its most iconic symbol, and Østerlars, built around 1150 AD, is the crown jewel. The soaring whitewashed rotunda with its massive central pillar, secret vaulted chambers, and vivid medieval frescoes is both architecturally extraordinary and deeply atmospheric. Your guide explains how local parishioners once stored livestock and provisions — and took armed shelter — inside these very walls during Baltic pirate raids. The surrounding churchyard, dotted with Viking-era rune stones, adds another layer of discovery.
