Stand on the rim of Sierra Negra's 10 km-wide caldera — the second largest on Earth — and gaze into an alien landscape of fresh lava fields at Volcán Chico. A once-in-a-lifetime volcanic panorama only Isabela can offer.
What to expect
A 4WD transfer from Puerto Villamil climbs into the highland cloud forest before the trailhead at 1,000 m elevation. The 16 km round-trip trek across hardened pahoehoé lava feels like walking on another planet, with steam vents hissing near the trail's edge. At the caldera rim, the sheer scale stops every hiker in their tracks — a 300-metre-deep bowl of black and rust-red lava stretching to the horizon. The side trail to Volcán Chico reveals multicoloured fumaroles and views across to Fernandina Island on clear days. Galapagos hawks and Darwin's finches accompany you throughout.
Good to know
This is a full-day excursion (~8 hours); confirm your ship has an extended port stay at Isabela or a late all-aboard before booking. Depart Puerto Villamil by 7:30 AM. Wear sturdy hiking boots, layers (the summit is cool and often misty), and carry 2 litres of water. The tender from Caleta Tagus to Puerto Villamil takes ~45 minutes.
