Sullivan Bay Pahoehoe Lava Field: Private Geology Expedition

Cross the moon-like 1897 pahoehoe lava flow at Sullivan Bay — one of Earth's most pristine and recent volcanic landscapes — with a licensed volcanologist-naturalist who decodes the geology of a living laboratory. Utterly otherworldly and found nowhere else on the planet.

What to expect

The panga lands you on the edge of a vast, still-black pahoehoe field where rope-like lava coils stretch to the horizon without a single footprint in sight. Your guide reads the flow like a text — identifying gas bubble blisters, lava tree moulds, and the first brave Brachycereus cacti and lava lizards colonising the rock. The silence is absolute except for the distant crash of Pacific swells. At the field's edge, Santiago's interior ridgeline rises dramatically, offering photography that looks more Mars than Earth. The return walk reveals how even a landscape this barren teems with life on closer inspection.

Good to know

Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes — the lava surface is jagged and uneven. The walk is approximately 2–3 km over flat but irregular terrain; moderate fitness recommended. Sullivan Bay is on Santiago's eastern coast — confirm with your ship that a panga excursion here is operationally feasible from your anchorage. Morning departures avoid midday heat on the exposed lava field. Bring 1.5 litres of water per person.
