Wander the Southern Hemisphere's largest collection of Northern Hemisphere trees — 3,500 species across 131 ha — then cool off beside the thundering curtain of Rere Falls. Seasonal colour rivals anything in Europe or New England.
What to expect
Your guide drives you into the lush Ngatapa Valley to Eastwoodhill, where winding paths reveal towering oaks, maples blazing with colour (autumn is extraordinary), and rare Northern Hemisphere conifers seldom seen in the Southern Hemisphere. A curator-led walk brings the founding vision of W. Douglas Cook to life. You then continue to the Rere Rockslide and nearby Rere Falls — a 20-metre wide natural curtain of water cascading into a crystalline pool framed by native bush. Time to paddle, picnic, or simply absorb the stillness before the return to port.
Good to know
Allow 3.5–4 hours. Autumn (March–May) delivers peak foliage colour. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a light waterproof layer. Pre-book directly; private departures can be tailored to your ship's schedule. Eastwoodhill charges a separate entry of approx. NZD 20 per adult.
