The waters between Faial and Pico are among Earth's richest cetacean corridors. A private RIB charter with a marine biologist guide brings you face-to-face with sperm whales, blue whales (seasonal), and several dolphin species.
What to expect
A nimble RIB departs Horta or Lajes do Pico (ferry connection arranged) with a maximum of 8–12 passengers. Your marine biologist briefs the group on cetacean behaviour before departure; a shore-based spotter radios GPS positions for active pods or surfacing sperm whales. Encounters at respectful distances — engines cut, silence held — make this profoundly moving. Blue and fin whales pass through in spring; resident sperm whales and common dolphins are year-round.
Good to know
Half-day format fits most port calls (3–4 hours on water). Book as far in advance as possible — peak season (May–Oct) sells out quickly. Wear layers; the sea breeze is cool even in summer. Ferry from Horta to Pico takes ~30 minutes if departing from Pico side.
