Walk the full rim of Faial's ancient caldera — a UNESCO-listed volcanic crater swathed in cryptomeria and hydrangeas — then descend to the eerie Capelinhos lava fields, one of the 20th century's most dramatic volcanic events.
What to expect
The Caldeira trail (8 km rim circuit, approx. 2.5 hours) winds through ancient laurisilva forest above a 400 m deep caldera — mist often rolls through, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. Afterwards, the guide drives the group to Capelinhos where the 1957–58 eruption created entirely new land; the partially buried lighthouse standing in the ash field is hauntingly photogenic. The underground Capelinhos Interpretation Centre completes the picture with immersive exhibits.
Good to know
Moderate fitness required for the caldera rim (some uneven volcanic rock). Capelinhos Centre entry approx. EUR 6 adults. Total duration approx. 5–6 hours. Transport between sites provided. Excellent fit for port days with a mid-afternoon all-aboard.
