Descend into Phillip Island's exclusive underground bunker and watch hundreds of Little Penguins waddle ashore at eye level, just metres away. This is the island's most intimate, limited-capacity wildlife encounter — utterly bucket-list.
What to expect
You descend into a heated underground bunker with panoramic glass windows positioned right at beach level. As last light fades, the first penguins emerge from the surf and begin their nightly march just a metre from the glass — close enough to hear them call to each other. Rangers provide quiet commentary throughout, explaining each penguin's behaviour and ecology. Photography without flash is permitted, and the small capacity means every guest has an uninterrupted front-row view.
Good to know
Parade timing is tied to sunset, ranging roughly 8 pm in summer to 5:30 pm in winter — confirm exact time at booking and cross-reference with your vessel's all-aboard. Underground tickets sell out weeks in advance; book the moment your port date is confirmed. Summerland Beach is a 20-minute taxi or rideshare from Cowes, the main tender point.
