Oarai's landmark Marine Tower rises 60 metres above the Pacific coastline, delivering unobstructed 360-degree views stretching from the Kanto plains to the open ocean — the finest single vantage point in Ibaraki Prefecture.
What to expect
The sleek white tower stands directly on Oarai's beachfront promenade, making it the area's most recognisable landmark and a natural centrepiece for a coastal walk. The glass-enclosed observation deck at 55 metres delivers panoramic views of the Pacific to the east, the Oarai fishing harbour and your ship to the south, and on clear days the distant peaks of the Nikkō mountains to the northwest. The tower visit takes 30–45 minutes and pairs naturally with a stroll along Oarai Sun Beach's black volcanic sand — dramatic, moody, and utterly Japanese in atmosphere. A small café at the base serves seasonal soft-serve ice cream made with local Ibaraki milk.
Good to know
Walking distance from the port area — roughly 10–15 min on foot along the coastal promenade, or a very short taxi ride. No pre-booking required; simply pay at the door. Best combined with the Isosaki-jinja shrine visit and a beach walk for a leisurely half-day on foot. Open daily; hours approx. 9am–5pm (confirm seasonally).
