Compton Acres is the finest privately owned gardens in the south of England — ten distinct, immaculately maintained gardens including a rare and authentic Japanese Garden, an Italian Colonnade and a wildflower-meadow English Garden, all set above Poole Harbour with glimpses of water through the trees.
What to expect
Wind through the Italian Garden's classical statuary and clipped hedges before descending into the hushed, meditative Japanese Garden where stone lanterns, bridges and a perfectly still pool create a sense of profound tranquillity. The Rock and Water Garden tumbles dramatically downhill, while the English Garden bursts with seasonal colour. Throughout, curated bronze sculptures appear at unexpected turns. The elevated position means occasional glimpses of Poole Harbour glittering below through the tree canopy.
Good to know
Located approximately 2 miles from Poole town centre — an easy taxi or rideshare from the quay. Allow a minimum of 2 hours to do the gardens justice; 3 hours is ideal. The on-site restaurant and café are excellent for a light lunch. Gardens are at their most spectacular from late spring through early autumn. Mostly accessible but some uneven path sections.
