Venture into the cloud-draped Arfak Mountains at first light with an expert ornithologist guide to witness the extraordinary courtship displays of multiple Bird of Paradise species — one of the planet's rarest and most theatrical wildlife spectacles.
What to expect
Your expert guide collects you before dawn and drives into the mist-laden Arfak foothills, home to the Magnificent, Western Parotia, Vogelkop Bowerbird and Superb Bird of Paradise. You'll move silently through primary rainforest to established viewing blinds, watching iridescent males perform their hypnotic dances in the early-morning light. Between sightings, the guide decodes the ecology and mythology of these creatures that captivated Alfred Russel Wallace. Return by mid-morning in time for lunch and all-aboard.
Good to know
Pre-book directly; tours depart 04:30–05:00 to catch peak dawn activity. Drive to Arfak foothills is ~1.5 hrs each way — confirm all-aboard time and allow buffer. Wear dark, muted clothing and closed shoes. Bring binoculars; a spotting scope is usually provided.
