Slip beneath Hiva Oa's cobalt surface on a small-group boat excursion to encounter blacktip reef sharks, leopard rays, and densely coloured coral gardens in one of the least-dived bays in French Polynesia.
What to expect
Depart the pier aboard a well-equipped rigid inflatable and motor along Hiva Oa's dramatic volcanic coastline to sheltered bays invisible from shore. Don mask and fins to glide over table corals and through schools of surgeonfish, with blacktip reef sharks cruising nonchalantly below. The guide free-dives to point out hidden creatures — octopus, nudibranch, reef lobster — before returning to the boat for fresh coconut water and local fruit. The Marquesas' remoteness means these waters see a fraction of the snorkel traffic of Bora Bora or Moorea.
Good to know
Duration approximately 3 hours; comfortably within most port calls. All snorkel equipment is provided; BYO reef-safe sunscreen (chemical sunscreens are banned in French Polynesia). Non-swimmers can join as observers. Sea conditions in the Marquesas can be lively — those with acute seasickness should take precautions before departure.
