Share an authentic umu earth-oven feast prepared by a Marquesan family — goat, breadfruit, fei bananas, coconut — and receive a private demonstration of the sacred art of Marquesan tattooing, the most complex geometric tradition in Polynesia.
What to expect
A short transfer from the pier brings you to a hillside fare (traditional house) shaded by taro and hibiscus, where the family has been preparing the underground oven since dawn. Sit cross-legged on pandanus mats for a feast that showcases the true flavours of the Marquesas — smoked goat with coconut milk, poisson cru with lime, roasted breadfruit and fermented ma paste. After eating, the resident tattooist unrolls drawings of ancestral motifs and explains how Marquesan tattoo — now recognised by UNESCO — encodes genealogy, status, and spiritual protection. Guests may request a small commemorative tattoo (additional fee, by prior arrangement).
Good to know
Duration approximately 3–3.5 hours; suitable within most port calls. Maximum 8 guests ensures genuine family hospitality rather than a tourist buffet. If a commemorative tattoo is desired, discuss design and placement when booking — the tattooist needs advance notice. Wear modest clothing respectful of a family home.
