Nahoon Reef is one of South Africa's most celebrated point breaks and a protected marine area teeming with bottlenose dolphins and reef fish. A private surf guide or marine snorkel session here is a quintessential Eastern Cape bucket-list moment.
What to expect
Nahoon Beach, consistently ranked among South Africa's Top 5 beaches, is a 10-minute drive from the port. Your instructor delivers a shore-side briefing before you paddle into the warm Indian Ocean swell. Even non-surfers can join a guided snorkel along the rocky reef edge, where sea urchins, octopus and colourful wrasse inhabit crystal-clear shallows. Post-session, unwind on powder-white sand with a cold drink from the beachfront café. The combination of wilderness beach and world-class surf energy is intoxicating.
Good to know
Book directly via Surf Zone's website at least a week ahead for private tuition slots. Conditions are best morning (08:00–11:00); aim to be back at port by 14:00 comfortably. Rash vests and boards provided — bring reef-safe sunscreen. Non-surfers can simply walk the beach and dunes, one of the finest in the Eastern Cape.
