Mpongo, a malaria-free Big 5 reserve just 35 minutes from the port, delivers heart-stopping big cat encounters in dense Eastern Cape valley bush — all before lunch. A small-group private game drive here is the most accessible safari luxury East London offers.
What to expect
An open Land Rover collects your party from the reserve gate for a 3-hour morning drive across a mosaic of valley bushveld, open grassland and rocky ridges. Mpongo is particularly renowned for cheetah, lion and white rhino sightings, but leopard, buffalo and herds of elephant are regular visitors too. Your ranger narrates the ecological and conservation story with evident passion. Return to the lodge veranda for a bush breakfast of freshly brewed coffee, boerewors and eggs before heading back to port.
Good to know
Reserve is approximately 35 km from the harbour — 30–35 minutes. Morning drives depart at 06:00 and return by 09:30–10:00, leaving ample time before all-aboard. Book the private vehicle option online for maximum flexibility. Neutral clothing preferred; the reserve provides blankets for the early-morning chill.
