What to expect
A small boat ferries you across the narrow Sound strait to the Calf, where Grey seals loll on the rocks and Manx shearwaters wheel overhead. The resident warden leads you past the historic Stevenson lighthouses and the ringing station where migrating birds are studied. You'll walk cliff paths with panoramic views back to the Isle of Man and out to the Irish Sea. The return crossing passes the dramatic Chicken Rock Lighthouse — one of the most photographed seamarks in the Irish Sea.
Good to know
Crossings depart from Port Erin or Port St Mary; the landing is weather-dependent so confirm with MWT close to your port day. Allow 3–3.5 hours total. Book direct with Manx Wildlife Trust well in advance as capacity is tightly capped. Check the all-aboard time and factor a 20-minute drive from either southern port.
